Presbyterian Church of the Master announces the calling of a new Pastor and Head of Staff, Rev. Jackson Clelland. Pastor Clelland begins his new call on March 1, 2011 and will deliver his first sermon on Sunday, March 6. A formal installation ceremony will be held on Sunday, April 3 at 4:00 pm with an open reception for community, visitors, and members immediately following.
Pastor Clelland returns to California following his most recent service as an Associate Pastor at University Place Presbyterian Church in University Place, Washington. “I love serving the Church … discovering ways in which the church can serve its community, being intentional to welcome outsiders as they find their way through our doors,” says Pastor Clelland, “I love that we get to participate in what God is doing”.
Jackson is relocating to Southern California with his wife, Malaika, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and their two daughters, Madeline and Chloe, five and four years old, respectively. Jackson enjoys longboard surfing, motorcycling, reading, running, and time with family. His gift for preaching, his authenticity, warmth, humor, and collaborative leadership will help the church to embrace and empower all generations to serve God in the name of Jesus.

Dr. Darrell Burnett is a clinical psychologist, marriage and family therapist, and sports psychologist specializing in youth sports, author, lecturer, and father of three. He has made radio and TV appearances (NBC, ABC, CBS, ESPN, CNN, Fox Sports Net, NPR, etc.) including an appearance of Robert Schuller’s nationally televised Hour of Power.

Dr. Burnett believes we parents are better off spending our energy developing responsible children, who will then become responsible adults. Join us to learn the keys to moral development in children, how to teach the “3 A’s” of consequences, and how to stay consistent. His animated, humor- ous, upbeat presentation includes anecdotes, cartoons, video and hand- outs.

Cobbie Palm, a Presbyterian mission worker in the Philippines since 1989, teaches students whose faithfulness to the gospel may one day cost them their lives. He and his faculty colleagues at Silliman University’s Divinity School prepare students for ministry in the United Church of Christ in the Philippines (UCCP). That church has had 20 pastors and other church workers killed since 2003. Many others have been abducted, tortured and jailed. Why? They dared to speak prophetically against injustice and corruption.

We’re glad to announce that Poncho Sanchez, a world-class performer, will highlight our Rhapsody of Love Benefit Concert at St Andrews Presbyterian Church.

Poncho Sanchez is a Latin jazz-band leader and salsa singer. In 2000, Sanchez and his ensemble won the Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album.

Also featured in the program is Ryan Cross, a renowned cellist and bassist, as well as television and film score composer. Cross has conducted arrangements for Michael Jackson (“This Is It” Tour), Earth Wind and Fire, Stevie Wonder, and Alicia Keys.

He has given some eighteen years of service to the Presbyterian Foundation and was associated with Monte Vista Grove Homes in Pasadena, a ministry of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), for the last two years.

The presbyteries he will serve are: Hanmi, Los Ranchos, Pacific, Riverside, San Diego, San Fernando, San Gabriel , and Santa Barbara.

Everyone Has to Deal with Conflict

Conflict is normal and inevitable — whether in the home, school, community, church or workplace. Leaders in all walks of life often have a responsibility to help others work through their conflicts.

The Mediation Skills Training Institute presented by the Lombard Mennonite Peace Center (LMPC) is designed to equip church leaders with the skills necessary to deal effectively with interpersonal, congregational, and other forms of group conflict. The five-day institute also includes a component on congregational intervention and consultation, placed within the context of family systems theory.

Although focused primarily on the church setting, the skills learned are directly transferable to other settings. Thus, managers in business, attorneys, experienced mediators and others in leadership will be enriched by the training as well, gaining skills in a transformational model of mediation.
